Interview Tips

There are many different types of interviews, so be prepared. You may encounter some of the following:

  • Screening Interview
    This may be by telephone. The interviewer wants to know if you meet minimum qualifications. This is usually followed up by another in- person interview.
  • Structured Interview
    The interviewer has a written job description against which to match your qualifications.
  • Unstructured Interview The interviewer can ask you about any area of experience and does not concentrate on specific areas of the job description.
  • Multiple Structured Interview You are asked to talk with a series of individuals on specific areas of the job description.
  • Stress Interview
    The interviewer tries to see how you react under pressure. You are asked questions which make you uncomfortable.
  • Situational Interview
    Problems which you might see on the job are set-up and you are asked to respond.
  • Group Interview
    Tips when you are interviewed by two or more people:
    • Prepare in advance, as much as possible.
    • Try to anticipate questions you might be asked and prepare your answers.
    • Learn about the organization (the web is best).
    • Prepare the questions you want to ask in advance.
    • Take a copy of your resume and references with you.
    • Make the best first impression possible.
    • Stand when greeting interviewer.
    • Have good eye contact.
    • Show confidence.

 

Some typical questions you may be asked:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What are your strengths/weaknesses?
  • What job do you want long term?
  • What do you know about our company?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • What is your greatest accomplishment?
  • Why do you want to change jobs?
