Interview Tips
There are many different types of interviews, so be prepared. You may encounter some of the following:
- Screening Interview
This may be by telephone. The interviewer wants to know if you meet minimum qualifications. This is usually followed up by another in- person interview.
- Structured Interview
The interviewer has a written job description against which to match your qualifications.
- Unstructured Interview
The interviewer can ask you about any area of experience and does not concentrate on specific areas of the job description.
- Multiple Structured Interview
You are asked to talk with a series of individuals on specific areas of the job description.
- Stress Interview
The interviewer tries to see how you react under pressure. You are asked questions which make you uncomfortable.
- Situational Interview
Problems which you might see on the job are set-up and you are asked to respond.
- Group Interview
Tips when you are interviewed by two or more people:
- Prepare in advance, as much as possible.
- Try to anticipate questions you might be asked and prepare your answers.
- Learn about the organization (the web is best).
- Prepare the questions you want to ask in advance.
- Take a copy of your resume and references with you.
- Make the best first impression possible.
- Stand when greeting interviewer.
- Have good eye contact.
- Show confidence.
Some typical questions you may be asked:
- Tell me about yourself.
- What are your strengths/weaknesses?
- What job do you want long term?
- What do you know about our company?
- Why should we hire you?
- What is your greatest accomplishment?
- Why do you want to change jobs?
Be sure to follow up the interview with a thank-you note.
